In a renewed effort to combat poverty and illiteracy in underserved communities, the Regy and Henry Amazing Grace Foundation (RHAGF), in partnership with the FCT Department of Mass Education and the National Mass Education Commission (NMEC), has moved to establish an Adult Literacy Learning Centre in Kukwaba Community, Kubwa, Abuja.
The official visit, which took place on Thursday, May 7, 2026, brought together government education officials, foundation representatives, and community leaders to discuss the immediate commencement of adult literacy classes aimed at empowering uneducated adults within the community.
The delegation paid a courtesy visit to the palace of His Royal Highness, Manasseh Luka, where the proposed literacy initiative was formally presented before the traditional ruler and members of the community.
Speaking during the engagement, representatives of the education agencies explained that the programme is designed to provide learning opportunities for adults, particularly women and men who were unable to access formal education earlier in life.
The traditional ruler welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, describing it as a long-awaited intervention for the people of Kukwaba.
According to him, many adults within the community have remained without formal education for years, making the literacy programme both timely and necessary.
His Royal Highness immediately granted approval for the establishment of the Adult Literacy Learning Centre and offered a temporary learning space within his palace premises to enable classes to begin without delay.
He also pledged support for the expansion of the programme should the number of learners increase in the coming months.
Officials of the FCT Department of Mass Education and NMEC also introduced two facilitators who will oversee the literacy classes and coordinate learning activities for the adult participants.
Among those present during the visit were the Zonal Coordinator of the FCT Department of Mass Education, Mr. Itam Nneoyi; the Area Officer, Mrs. Nwafor Ifeoma; NMEC representative, Miss Edeh Blessing; as well as representatives of the Regy and Henry Amazing Grace Foundation, Mrs. Regina Martha, Slum Coordinator, and Izobo Monica, Secretary.
Community members expressed appreciation for the initiative and described it as a major step toward social and economic empowerment.
However, women within the community requested additional time to organize themselves and agree on suitable learning schedules before classes officially commence.
The visit ended on a successful note, having secured the endorsement and support of the Kukwaba community leadership for the literacy project.
The Kukwaba community say the collaboration between RHAGF, NMEC, and the FCT Department of Mass Education reflects a growing commitment to tackling illiteracy, empowering adults, and promoting sustainable community development across vulnerable communities in the Federal Capital Territory.
The delegation later took photographs with community leaders before departing peacefully from the community.
