The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Olakunle Nafiu, has called on employers across Nigeria to take a more active role in mentoring corps members, emphasizing that proper guidance is critical to building the nation’s next generation of leaders.

The appeal came during a high-level meeting at NYSC headquarters with the leadership of the Securities and Exchange Commission, led by its Director-General, Emomotimi Agama.

The visit marked the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at promoting financial literacy among corps members nationwide—a move both agencies describe as strategic for youth empowerment and economic development.

Speaking at the event, Nafiu underscored the transformative role employers play in shaping young graduates during their service year. He noted that corps members are “ready, resilient, and committed,” but require intentional mentorship to fully realize their potential.

“The way you relate with them, build and mentor them will greatly impact their future and the nation,” he said.

He also praised the SEC leadership for reforms that have strengthened Nigeria’s capital market and boosted public confidence, reaffirming NYSC’s readiness to collaborate closely with the commission.

In his remarks, Agama highlighted the NYSC’s enduring role in fostering national unity and integration, noting that its nationwide deployment structure gives it an unmatched grassroots reach.
He stressed the urgency of equipping corps members with financial knowledge, describing them as vital agents for spreading financial literacy across communities.
“Corps members are great assets who can effectively take the message of financial education to the grassroots,” Agama said.

Agama, who reflected on his own service year experience, welcomed the partnership as a forward-looking initiative that will prepare young Nigerians for leadership and financial independence.

The collaboration is expected to enhance the capacity of corps members while strengthening public awareness of financial systems—an effort seen as pivotal to Nigeria’s broader socio-economic development goals.
