The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has called for increased investment in weather and climate observation systems, warning that Nigeria faces growing threats from extreme temperatures and flooding driven by climate change.
Speaking at the 2026 World Meteorological Day celebration held at NiMet headquarters in Abuja, Anosike emphasized that accurate weather forecasting depends heavily on data collected today.
Marking the global event established by the World Meteorological Organization, he noted that this year’s theme, “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow,” underscores the importance of reliable meteorological observations in safeguarding lives and supporting economic development.
According to Anosike, NiMet has significantly expanded its infrastructure over the years, including surface and upper-air observation systems, satellite data reception, and automated weather stations.
These tools, he said, have improved aviation safety, agricultural planning, disaster preparedness, and maritime operations nationwide.
He also revealed that Nigeria is playing a growing international role by supporting countries such as Liberia, Niger, Somalia, and Burkina Faso through technical advisory services under global cooperation initiatives aimed at strengthening observation systems.
However, the NiMet chief warned that climate change is placing unprecedented pressure on meteorological services.
“The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are increasing, while weather monitoring equipment is being exposed to harsher conditions,” he said.
Citing the agency’s State of the Climate in Nigeria 2025 report, Anosike disclosed that at least 23 cities recorded extreme temperatures above 40°C, with Nguru in Yobe State experiencing as many as 100 such days. He added that flooding incidents are also becoming more frequent and severe across the country.
He stressed that no government can tackle these challenges alone, urging stronger collaboration with the private sector. According to him, private investment in technologies such as artificial intelligence weather models, remote sensing, and data analytics will be crucial in strengthening Nigeria’s meteorological capabilities.
“Every weather station installed today improves our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and enhances our ability to predict future climate events,” he said, describing the theme as a “critical and urgent call to action.”
NIHSA Commends NiMet, Urges Wider Use of Forecasts
In a goodwill message,the Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, praised NiMet’s contributions to national development, describing the agency as the backbone of Nigeria’s weather and climate services.
Speaking at the same event, Mohammed highlighted the importance of collaboration among meteorologists, hydrologists, and environmental experts in addressing climate-related challenges.
He noted that weather, climate, and water data remain essential for disaster risk reduction, environmental protection, and economic planning, particularly for vulnerable communities.
Mohammed urged stakeholders to make better use of available forecasts to improve livelihoods and strengthen resilience across sectors.
“As we celebrate today, we must continue to promote the use of meteorological and hydrological information for the benefit of our economy and the well-being of our citizens,” he said.
The 2026 World Meteorological Day celebration brought together government officials, scientists, private sector players, and development partners, all united in a renewed commitment to strengthening observation systems and building a more climate-resilient future for Nigeria.
