Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as unfulfilled electoral promises on electricity supply, citing worsening power conditions across the country.
Obi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on his official Facebook handle recalled a statement made by Tinubu during the 2023 presidential campaign, where the now-president pledged to deliver stable electricity within four years or forfeit support for a second term.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s electricity situation has declined since Tinubu assumed office in 2023.
He noted that power generation, which stood at over 4,000 megawatts at the time, has since dropped below that threshold on average, while electricity tariffs have increased for consumers nationwide.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted Nigeria’s low electricity consumption per capita, describing it as one of the lowest globally. He stated that Nigeria’s consumption level remains significantly below the African average, underscoring what he called a deepening energy crisis affecting households and businesses.
Obi further referenced a recent remark by President Tinubu during a brief visit to Jos on April 2, 2026, where the president reportedly attributed his short stay to a lack of electricity at the airport. The visit was made to commiserate with families affected by recent violence in the area.
Quoting the president’s comment about the absence of power at the facility, Obi argued that the incident reflects a disconnect between leadership and the daily realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, many of whom endure prolonged power outages.
He called for greater accountability in governance, urging Nigerians to demand leadership that prioritizes public welfare and delivers on campaign commitments.
Obi concluded with a renewed call for national transformation, reiterating his belief that a better Nigeria remains achievable.
