The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Prof. Charles Anosike, has been honoured with the 2026 Nigerian Educational Excellence Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership and commitment to advancing education through meteorology-based studies and professional training across Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
The prestigious award was presented on Monday, May 11, 2026, by the Faculty of Education of Federal University Oye-Ekiti during a ceremony held at the university in Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Since assuming office, Prof. Anosike has been widely credited with repositioning NiMet through strategic initiatives aimed at placing the agency on the global map. His leadership style, described by many as visionary and transformative, has continued to attract recognition both nationally and internationally.
Represented at the ceremony by the Director of Weather Forecasting Services, Vincent Weli, Prof. Anosike expressed gratitude to the organisers for finding him worthy of the honour.
He described the award as a reflection of NiMet management’s unwavering commitment to knowledge advancement, innovation, and educational development in Nigeria.
“As the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, I am privileged to lead an organisation whose impact stretches beyond weather forecasting into the heart of our nation’s educational development,” Anosike stated.
According to him, NiMet has consistently collaborated with educational institutions by providing curriculum support, hands-on meteorological training, and access to critical climate data for students, researchers, and educators.
“From hosting annual climate workshops to integrating meteorological modules into university programmes, NiMet’s contributions have strengthened the bridge between science and society,” he added.
Prof. Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to investing in the next generation of meteorologists, researchers, and innovators.
“Today’s recognition inspires us to deepen these partnerships and ensure that meteorological knowledge remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s educational advancement,” he said.
Speaking earlier at the event, Prof. Weli noted that while NiMet remains a science and service institution, Prof. Anosike’s leadership has significantly advanced education by transforming meteorological science into practical learning opportunities for universities, classrooms, and young professionals nationwide.
He revealed that under Anosike’s leadership, NiMet has expanded collaborations with tertiary institutions to integrate operational weather data into academic curricula covering meteorology, geography, environmental science, and agriculture.
Weli further stated that the NiMet DG has prioritised the training of young meteorologists and technicians in modern forecasting tools, data analysis, and impact-based warning systems.
He added that Anosike’s commitment to open data access and effective public communication has transformed NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction and Daily Weather Outlook into valuable teaching tools for lecturers, students, and researchers studying climate dynamics within the Nigerian environment.
“This award recognises more than technical innovation; it recognises Prof. Anosike’s belief that education is the bridge between scientific knowledge and national resilience,” Weli said.
“By embedding training, mentorship, and research collaboration into NiMet’s core mandate, he has shown that a public agency can function as both a service provider and an educational partner,” he concluded.
Also present at the ceremony were the Director of Legal Services at NiMet, Shola Gabriel, and the Special Assistant on General Services to the DG, Emmanuel Uket.
