The President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Kikelomo Adeniyi, will on Saturday, 16 May 2026, lead a major climate advocacy campaign tagged “Walk for a Greener Nigeria” in Abuja, as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen public participation in climate action across the country.
The advocacy walk, scheduled to commence from the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, is expected to attract environmental advocates, community stakeholders, volunteers, government officials, and members of the public in a united call for cleaner communities and sustainable living practices.
The campaign forms part of COWA’s expanding Green Borders Initiative, a sustainability programme focused on grassroots environmental advocacy, ecological preservation, and community-driven action. The initiative follows the Association’s widely publicised “1,000 Trees in One Hour” nationwide tree-planting exercise aimed at supporting climate action and restoring ecosystems.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mrs Adeniyi stressed that environmental protection must be embraced as a collective civic responsibility.“If we are to secure a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities, we must all recognise that environmental stewardship is a shared duty. This initiative is not simply about environmental advocacy; it is about inspiring responsibility, strengthening awareness, and encouraging collective action that can endure for generations,” she stated.
She explained that the “Walk for a Greener Nigeria” campaign seeks to encourage responsible environmental habits, promote cleaner surroundings, and stimulate broader national conversations around climate change, waste management, and ecological preservation.

According to her, the initiative reflects COWA’s commitment to advocacy-driven sustainability programmes capable of delivering measurable social impact through public engagement and awareness.
“Our vision is to make environmental consciousness a way of life in our communities. Through the Green Borders initiative, we want to inspire local ownership, encourage partnerships, and build a nationwide movement where sustainability is driven not only by policy, but by people,” Mrs Adeniyi added.
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, alongside the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, are expected to participate in the exercise with other dignitaries, underscoring growing institutional support for climate advocacy initiatives in Nigeria.
The campaign is expected to strengthen collaboration among government agencies, environmental groups, and local communities, while encouraging Nigerians — particularly women and youths — to take more active roles in environmental protection and long-term ecological sustainability.
Participants are also expected to use the advocacy platform to amplify calls for greener communities, stronger environmental policies, and increased public involvement in addressing climate-related challenges confronting the nation.
With the planned advocacy walk, Mrs Adeniyi continues to position COWA as a key driver of community-based environmental mobilisation and public awareness on sustainable development in Nigeria.
