The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched an ambitious Strategic Plan for 2026–2030 aimed at strengthening weather and climate services, enhancing institutional performance, and improving resilience across Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, described the new roadmap as a continuation of the agency’s long-standing mandate of safeguarding lives and property, a role it has played for over 140 years.

He explained that the plan serves as a comprehensive performance management framework designed to align NiMet’s operations with Nigeria’s broader national development goals. According to him, the agency is positioning itself to become the first public institution in Nigeria’s aviation sector to fully institutionalise a world-class Balanced Scorecard system.

The strategic plan is anchored on five key pillars: employee growth and development, strategic partnerships, technology and innovation, quality service delivery, and revenue diversification.

The launch also underscores NiMet’s alignment with the Federal Government’s results-driven governance framework coordinated by the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU). The unit was established at the start of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen performance monitoring across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies through performance bonds and results-based budgeting.

In his remarks, the Managing Consultant and CEO of Balanced Scorecard West Africa (BSWA), Kayode Sufianu, commended NiMet for adopting the Balanced Scorecard framework. He noted that the approach enables organisations to translate strategy into measurable outcomes across key areas, including stakeholder engagement, financial stewardship, internal processes, and organisational capacity.

As part of the rollout, NiMet also introduced a refreshed set of core values under the acronym I-PACE — Integrity, Professionalism, Accountability, Commitment, and Excellence — which will guide the implementation of the new strategy.

This initiative marks a major milestone in NiMet’s drive to deliver more efficient, innovative, and responsive meteorological services nationwide.
