Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), marking a significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

In a statement released on Sunday, 29 March , 2026, Kwankwaso announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, ending his tenure as the party’s National Leader. He described the decision as difficult but necessary in light of what he termed the need for “strategic realignment” within the country’s political space.

Kwankwaso, who flew the NNPP flag in the 2023 general elections, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the party and represent it at the highest level of national politics. He acknowledged the support of party stakeholders, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, and members across all levels.

According to the former governor, his decision to leave the NNPP is driven by a desire to align with a political platform that offers a stronger chance of delivering meaningful change in Nigeria.

He also extended appreciation to the party’s Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, grassroots leaders, and loyal supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, noting that their collective efforts remain vital to the country’s future.

Despite his exit, Kwankwaso emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among political actors, expressing optimism about working together toward a “better and more prosperous” Nigeria.

While he did not disclose his next political destination, his statement strongly suggests an imminent move to African Democratic party as earlier reported by Africa News Nation -ANNTV, as political realignments gather momentum ahead of future elections.
