The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and members of the Federal Executive Council on Tuesday highlighted what they described as major achievements recorded under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as it marks three years in office and Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
Speaking during a World Press Briefing at the Rotunda Hall of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Akume said the Tinubu administration’s economic, security, health, and social reforms were beginning to yield positive results, insisting that the government remained committed to delivering on its Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The good news is that we are succeeding,” Akume declared while presenting the administration’s scorecard.
According to the SGF, the government’s fiscal reforms were designed to improve fairness, increase revenue generation, and strengthen economic stability.
He noted that Nigeria’s economy has continued to record positive growth, with investment and trade indicators remaining in positive territory over the last two quarters.
Akume also revealed that consumer credit initiatives had expanded access to financing, with records showing that about ₦37 billion had been disbursed through consumer credit schemes. In the health sector, he said reforms in the national health insurance system had created a legal framework for wider healthcare coverage, while President Tinubu had directed the implementation of mandatory health insurance across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
On security, the SGF acknowledged that challenges persist but stressed that government efforts were being intensified through increased funding, improved coordination, and enhanced military capacity.
He said the administration remains vigilant against terrorism, banditry, and other security threats, while strengthening diplomatic cooperation with neighbouring countries and international partners.
“We will not pretend that insecurity will disappear overnight, but institutional responses are being sharpened, coordination is improving, and reforms are continuing because peace and civic order are foundations of democratic progress,” he stated.
Akume called on Nigerians to support security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Akume described the 27 years of uninterrupted democracy as a testament to the resilience and patriotism of Nigerians.
He emphasized the importance of national unity, noting that development thrives where trust is stronger than division.
He highlighted the role of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in promoting peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims and fostering national stability.
The SGF also pointed to the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the National Values Charter, aimed at promoting discipline, tolerance, citizenship, reciprocity, and public service.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Akume said the administration would continue to build on existing reforms and seek renewed public support based on its performance.
“Our responsibility is to finish what we commenced in 2023. Under the bold and imaginative leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, more dividends of democracy will be delivered,” he said.
Earlier, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the occasion provided an opportunity to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic achievements and assess the progress made under the Tinubu administration.
He described the 27th Democracy Day anniversary as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s political history and paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices contributed to the restoration of democratic rule.
“This year’s Democracy Day celebration is particularly significant as it coincides with the third anniversary of the Renewed Hope Administration.It offers an opportunity to review our progress, assess ongoing reforms, and reaffirm our commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria,” Idris said.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, outlined achievements recorded in water supply, dam construction, irrigation, hydropower generation, and sanitation.
According to him, the ministry has commissioned and expanded several water supply schemes across the country, providing potable water to communities and benefiting more than 451,000 Nigerians through projects executed under partnerships such as P-WASH, SUR-WASH, and African Development Bank-supported programmes.
Utsev disclosed that the Greater Dutse Water Supply Project in Jigawa State is expected to serve more than 1.5 million residents, while several dams have been completed and commissioned to support water supply, irrigation, agriculture, and flood control.
The minister also announced that hydropower projects contributing about 110 megawatts of clean energy have been completed, while concession arrangements have generated approximately ₦7 billion in revenue for the Federal Government.
On sanitation, he said the Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign had achieved significant progress, with 172 local government areas declared open-defecation-free out of Nigeria’s 774 local councils.
“We are determined to end open defecation in Nigeria by 2030,” Utsev stated.
Other ministers who addressed the briefing included the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, who said the livestock sector holds enormous potential for economic growth, job creation, and national security.
The Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, also commended President Tinubu’s leadership and reform initiatives, while Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, spoke on the significance of June 12 and Nigeria’s democratic journey.
As the briefing concluded, government officials maintained that the Tinubu administration remains focused on delivering measurable results across key sectors.
Akume said the administration welcomes public scrutiny and is prepared to be judged on evidence and performance.
“Democracy is about accountability. This government remains prepared to be judged by its achievements, and the ministers will continue to provide Nigerians with evidence of progress across all sectors,” he said.
