The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 60MVA, 132/33kV Mobile Power Transformer at its Damaturu 132/33kV Transmission Substation, significantly boosting electricity transmission capacity across parts of Yobe State.
The transformer was successfully energised at 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, increasing the substation’s transformation capacity from 120MVA to 180MVA.
According to TCN, the additional transformer will improve operational flexibility and reliability, provide redundancy during maintenance and unexpected outages, and enable the substation to meet growing electricity demand in the state.
The upgrade is expected to make more bulk electricity available to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) for onward distribution to customers in Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Babangida, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, and surrounding communities.
TCN said the project forms part of its ongoing Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)-funded programme aimed at expanding and strengthening Nigeria’s transmission network to improve the reliability and efficiency of bulk power supply nationwide.
The company noted that the investment underscores its commitment to enhancing power infrastructure and supporting improved electricity delivery to homes, businesses, and critical public institutions across the country.
