••• Northern, Central States Face Afternoon Storms; Southern Region Set for Persistent Rainfall, Flood Risk

Nigeria is expected to experience widespread thunderstorms and rainfall on Sunday, August 2, 2026, with the (NiMet) forecasting varying degrees of rain across the northern, central and southern parts of the country.
In the Northern States, patches of clouds are expected during the morning, with thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall over parts of Taraba and Adamawa States.
The weather is expected to become more unsettled in the afternoon and evening, with moderate thunderstorms forecast over parts of Borno, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba States.
NiMet warned that thunderstorms could become more widespread later in the day, potentially accompanied by strong winds and localized flooding.
In the Central States, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, with intermittent rainfall possible over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benue, Plateau and Nasarawa States.
By the afternoon and evening, moderate thunderstorms are expected over parts of Benue, Kogi, the FCT, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau States.
The Southern States are expected to record cloudy conditions in the morning, with intermittent rainfall over parts of Ogun, Osun and the South-East and South-South regions.
Moderate rainfall is expected to continue into the afternoon and evening across parts of Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo and the South-East and South-South regions.
NiMet’s outlook indicates that many southern states could experience persistent rainfall, resulting in wet roads and the possibility of localized flooding.
The weather agency advised residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain vigilant, particularly in locations where heavy downpours are expected.
It also warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid flooded roads.
Residents were further advised to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms where necessary, while airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather briefings from NiMet to support safe flight planning.
NiMet urged the public to remain weather-smart and stay informed as conditions may change during the day.
