The Regy & Henry Amazing Grace Foundation has called on young people in slums and vulnerable communities across Nigeria to embrace skills acquisition, education and community advocacy as tools for overcoming poverty, trafficking, drug abuse and other social challenges.
The Foundation made the call in an address to mark the 2026 International Youth Day, celebrated on Wednesday, August 12, under the theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” with a special focus on youths in slums and vulnerable communities.
Speaking to young people in Gbuduwyi and similar communities, the Foundation said it recognised the challenges confronting youths, including school dropout, poverty, illiteracy, drug abuse, gender-based violence, trafficking and fraudulent employment schemes.
It, however, stressed that despite these challenges, young people possess enormous potential, talent and capacity to transform their communities.
The Foundation identified skills acquisition, education and advocacy as its major tools for addressing societal ills and empowering vulnerable youths.
It said skills such as tailoring, cooking, phone repairs and soap making could provide young people with legitimate means of livelihood and reduce their vulnerability to traffickers and drug dealers.
On education, the organisation stressed that literacy and digital skills were critical to protecting young people from scams and exploitation, particularly fake employment offers circulated through social media and messaging platforms.
The Foundation also pledged to continue advocating for stronger protection of young people, urging relevant government agencies and stakeholders to intensify efforts against human trafficking, drug abuse and other forms of exploitation.
It charged youths not to wait for external assistance but to become agents of change within their communities.
The Foundation urged young people to acquire skills, teach others, reject drug abuse and fake job offers, protect their mental health and use digital devices for learning and productive activities rather than fraud.
“You are not ‘slum youth’. You are Community Solution Leaders,” the Foundation declared.
It further announced that it would continue its interventions in Gbuduwyi and other vulnerable communities through vocational training, literacy programmes, psychological support and advocacy.
According to the organisation, its Safe Employment and Aftercare Policy is designed to ensure that beneficiaries of its training programmes receive continued support rather than being abandoned after acquiring skills.
The Foundation appreciated community leaders, government agencies, facilitators, volunteers and other partners for supporting its programmes and called for greater collaboration to improve opportunities for vulnerable youths.
It concluded its International Youth Day message with a commitment to ensuring that no young person or community is left behind.“No youth left behind. No community left behind,” the Foundation declared.
