The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Dr. Philip Anosike, has participated in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) High-Level Dialogue on Climate Science Information for Climate Finance and the 53rd Senior Official Field Exchange (SOFE) held in Beijing, China.
The high-level events, which took place from September 14 to 18, 2026, brought together senior officials and experts to examine ways of strengthening the role of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in climate finance, early warning systems and climate-resilient development.
Discussions at the High-Level Dialogue focused on enhancing the leadership capacity of NMHSs to mobilise climate finance, while aligning scientific and technical capabilities with risk-informed, people-centred early warning systems.
Participants also explored strategies for moving beyond traditional technical assistance towards sustainable investment by expanding practical cooperation between national meteorological frameworks and multilateral financing institutions.
The dialogue further underscored the importance of supporting NMHS leadership in strengthening strategic thinking, building effective partnerships and improving access to climate-related financing.
Held back-to-back with the High-Level Dialogue, the 53rd Senior Official Field Exchange took participants to Fujian Province, where they gained first-hand exposure to China’s implementation of the Multi-hazard, Alert, Zero-gap and Universal (MAZU) platform.
The MAZU platform, an artificial intelligence-driven meteorological early warning solution, supports the objectives of the WMO’s Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative and broader disaster risk reduction efforts.
The field exchange featured technical discussions, site visits and peer-learning sessions, providing participating officials with practical insights into the application of advanced meteorological technologies and multi-hazard early warning systems.
Anosike’s participation in the WMO engagements provided an opportunity for Nigeria to share perspectives and strengthen international cooperation on climate science, early warning systems, disaster risk reduction and sustainable climate financing.
