The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line following a major power supply disruption that affected Lagos and surrounding areas on Thursday morning, while engineers continue efforts to reinstate the Benin–Omotoso 330kV line.
According to TCN, the incident occurred at approximately 8:19 a.m. when the national grid experienced voltage instability that rapidly spread across the Lagos corridor. The disturbance led to the loss of some generating stations, triggered transmission line outages, and caused widespread interruption of electricity supply within the Lagos complex.
To prevent further deterioration of the grid, the National Control Centre immediately directed several power generation companies to reduce their output. The measure was aimed at controlling the resulting frequency rise, stabilising the system, and safeguarding the national grid from additional disruptions.
Reacting swiftly to the development, the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, convened an emergency meeting with the leadership of the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to coordinate restoration efforts and review measures to prevent future occurrences.
TCN disclosed that the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line, which was opened during the incident, has now been successfully restored and is currently transmitting bulk electricity.
However, work continues on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV transmission line, where a joint team of TCN engineers from the Benin and Omotoso sub-regions is addressing the remaining faults to enable the full restoration of bulk power supply to Lagos and its environs.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents, businesses, and electricity consumers affected by the outage, assuring the public that the Ministry of Power and relevant agencies are working round the clock to restore normal operations.
TCN reiterated that its long-term objective remains the stabilisation and strengthening of the national grid to minimise the recurrence of such incidents.
In a statement issued on Thursday, General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, appealed to affected consumers to remain patient as restoration work continues.
“We urge all affected consumers to exercise patience as we work to restore bulk power supply through the Benin–Omotoso transmission line. Updates will be provided as restoration progresses,” the statement said.
The company also thanked Nigerians for their understanding and continued support during the restoration process.
