The Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) has announced plans to host a high-level international summit aimed at combating the rising threat of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), a growing concern in global security and economic stability.
The conference, officially titled the Diplomatic, Security, Trade, and Investment International Conference, is scheduled to take place on May 20, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria in Abuja.
According to DICAN Chairman, Idehai Frederick, the summit will focus on fostering what he described as “collaborative truth” to counter misinformation and safeguard international relations.
“A secure information environment is essential for strong trade and investment. Misinformation can scare away foreign investors and destabilize local markets,” Frederick stated.
The event is expected to attract a diverse group of stakeholders, including diplomats, intelligence officials, media practitioners, and business leaders, all seeking to strengthen cross-sector cooperation against disinformation threats.
Organizers say the summit will work toward establishing international frameworks to counter state-sponsored propaganda, enhance mechanisms for detecting and neutralizing hybrid threats, and promote responsible journalism to protect national and economic interests.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, who serves as DICAN’s Grand Patron, will deliver the keynote address. He will be joined by notable speakers such as Gautier Mignot, alongside security experts, regulators, and private sector stakeholders.
The upcoming summit builds on the success of DICAN’s inaugural international conference held in July 2025, which attracted participation from over 60 diplomatic missions, civil society groups, and academic institutions.
With the 2026 edition, DICAN aims to deepen global collaboration against the weaponization of false information while reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a secure and attractive destination for trade and investment.
