The Environmental Media Correspondents Association of Nigeria (EMCAN) has dissolved its existing executive leadership and constituted an interim leadership committee to reposition the association and pave the way for credible elections.

The decisions were reached at an Emergency Congress of EMCAN held on Friday, July 31, 2026, in Abuja, where environmental journalists from various media organisations deliberated extensively on the state of the association, its leadership structure and the need to strengthen its governance.

The Congress unanimously endorsed Joycelyn Ellakeche Adah of Per Second News as Interim Chairman to steer the affairs of the association during the transition period.
The move followed concerns raised by members over the prolonged tenure of the existing executive led by Mr. Amechi Chukwuekwu Oyema and the absence of a fresh electoral process for the emergence of executive members.
Consequently, the Congress resolved to dissolve the existing executive and establish an interim leadership pending the conduct of elections.
To ensure a transparent transition, the Congress also constituted a three-member Electoral Committee comprising Chidi Ugwu, Adah Achanya and Adekunle Silver Buruji.
The Electoral committee was given 30 days to prepare and conduct elections for a new substantive leadership of the association.
It was also mandated to liaise with the former executives to retrieve all documents, records, bank details and other assets belonging to EMCAN.

The newly constituted Interim Leadership Committee comprises Joycelyn E. Adah as Interim Chairman; David Onoja as Interim Secretary; Zeniat O. Abubakar; Abigael I. Joshua; Samuel Adeyinka; and Folarin Kehinde as members.
In separate remarks during the Congress meeting , members said the decisions were driven by the collective desire to strengthen EMCAN, promote accountability and inclusiveness, and restore democratic and professional standards in the administration of the association.
The new interim leadership pledged to work with all stakeholders to foster unity, transparency and inclusiveness while supporting the Electoral Committee to deliver credible elections within the stipulated 30-day timeframe.
The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to building a stronger, more vibrant and influential association capable of effectively representing environmental journalists and contributing meaningfully to environmental reporting, advocacy and national development.

The Emergency Congress was held in Abuja on July 31, 2026, under the auspices of the Environmental Media Correspondents Association of Nigeria (EMCAN).
