The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has applauded the Government of the United Kingdom for reaffirming its commitment to advancing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda in Nigeria, describing the renewed partnership as a major boost to the country’s efforts toward sustainable peace and inclusive governance.
The commendation followed high-level discussions at the Nigeria–UK Defence and Security Forum, where the UK, through its Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), reaffirmed its support for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325.
The UK also pledged continued collaboration to strengthen the meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, mediation, stabilization, and post-conflict recovery.
The Ministry acknowledged the impact of the UK’s SPRING Programme, noting that it has continued to support initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive peace and security, strengthening institutions, and empowering women as key stakeholders in building resilient communities across Nigeria.
Speaking on the renewed commitment, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, fsi, described the UK’s pledge as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
She stressed that the full implementation of UNSCR 1325 remains critical to ensuring that women are not only protected during periods of conflict but are also empowered to serve as leaders, negotiators, and decision-makers in peace and security processes.
The Minister further reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to strengthening collaboration with international partners in promoting inclusive governance, reinforcing institutional frameworks, and advancing sustainable peace through the meaningful participation of women at all levels.
