The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has praised the Nigerian Army for providing a secure and conducive environment for Corps Members and NYSC formations across the country, describing security as critical to the success of the Scheme.
General Nafiu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Jos, Major General Folusho Oyinlola.
According to the NYSC Director-General, the Scheme cannot effectively carry out its mandate in an atmosphere of insecurity, noting that the continued support of the nation’s security agencies has been instrumental in ensuring smooth operations across the country.
He specifically commended the 3 Division for its commitment to safeguarding Corps Members, revealing that no Orientation Course had ever been cancelled in any state under the Division’s jurisdiction due to security challenges.
General Nafiu disclosed that more than 7,000 Corps Members are currently serving in Plateau State, contributing significantly to socio-economic development through their various places of primary assignment.
He reiterated that since its establishment, the NYSC has remained a key driver of national unity, integration and social cohesion by promoting cultural exchange, encouraging inter-tribal marriages and creating opportunities for youth empowerment and employment.
The DG also highlighted the Scheme’s impact on critical sectors, particularly health and education, through the deployment of Corps doctors, nurses and teachers to hospitals and public schools across the country.
While seeking continued support from the military, General Nafiu stated that the NYSC is implementing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and service delivery nationwide.
In his response, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, commended the NYSC Director-General for the achievements and initiatives recorded since assuming office.
He described General Nafiu as a worthy ambassador of the Nigerian Army and praised the NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, staff and Corps Members for their dedication and commitment to service.
Major General Oyinlola noted that the positive impact of the NYSC remains evident across the country and expressed confidence in the Scheme’s ability to achieve greater milestones.
The GOC reaffirmed the commitment of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army to ensuring the safety and security of Corps Members serving within its area of responsibility, assuring that the military would continue to provide the necessary support for the successful implementation of the NYSC mandate.
