President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
Adeniyi’s previous tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026. The latest extension is aimed at enabling him to consolidate ongoing reforms within the Customs Service, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window (NSW) initiative, a key government programme designed to facilitate trade and improve efficiency at the nation’s ports and borders.
The extension will also ensure a smooth leadership transition within the Nigeria Customs Service.
During the period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the NCS Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of personnel who have attained the statutory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.
A seasoned customs officer, Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.
He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
President Tinubu appointed him as Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, a position from which he has spearheaded several reforms aimed at enhancing revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border security.
The latest extension is expected to provide continuity for ongoing modernization efforts within the Customs Service while laying the groundwork for an orderly succession process ahead of Adeniyi’s eventual exit from office in February 2027.
