A prominent Ebira philanthropist, identified as BMT, has raised alarm after a personal encounter with a serving soldier in Abuja revealed the depth of hardship endured by those tasked with protecting the nation.
According to BMT, the incident occurred shortly after his return to the Federal Capital Territory. He was stopped by a soldier on duty, who politely requested assistance in transporting a colleague heading toward Abuja. Agreeing to help, BMT picked up the soldier, unaware of the emotional story that would unfold during the journey.
As they approached Giri Junction, BMT inquired about the soldier’s destination. The soldier explained he was headed to Zuba, while BMT was traveling through the Lugbe axis. What began as a casual conversation soon turned somber.
The soldier revealed he was traveling home to meet his newborn twins for the first time after 10 months on duty without leave. Tragically, he had just received news that one of the twins had died, and his wife urged him to return urgently to see the surviving child, whose health remained uncertain.
Further conversation uncovered deeper concerns. The soldier disclosed that he had delayed his journey in hopes that his salary—already overdue—would be paid. However, as of the second day of the month, no payment had been made.
With only ₦4,500 in his possession—an amount insufficient to complete his trip—the soldier faced both emotional and financial distress. Moved by the situation, BMT provided him with ₦20,000 and exchanged contact details to follow up on the condition of the surviving child.
