The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday paid a high-level solidarity visit to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), raising alarm over what both parties described as increasing political pressure on opposition groups across the country.
The PDP delegation said the visit was prompted by recent political attacks targeting opposition parties, warning that such developments pose a serious risk to Nigeria’s democratic framework.
According to the party, similar pressures have been experienced within its ranks in recent times, underscoring what it called a “shared threat” to political plurality.
Speaking during the meeting, members of the PDP delegation stressed the need for vigilance and unity among opposition parties to safeguard democratic principles and prevent the erosion of institutional checks and balances.
The delegation was led by prominent figures, including Seyi Makinde, Adolphus Wabara, and Jerry Gana, alongside other senior party stakeholders.
They were received by top ADC leaders, among them former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, as well as several influential political figures across party lines.
In their response, ADC leaders expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a timely show of solidarity.
The party reiterated concerns about what it termed an “existential threat” to Nigeria’s democracy, particularly through efforts aimed at weakening major opposition platforms.
Both parties agreed on the need for sustained dialogue and collaboration to defend democratic institutions, emphasizing that a strong opposition remains vital to the health and stability of Nigeria’s political system.
