As the world commemorates the 2026 International Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the Regy & Henry Amazing Grace Foundation (RHAGF) has called for intensified efforts to prevent human trafficking and strengthen support systems for survivors, particularly in Nigeria’s slum communities and other vulnerable areas.
The RHAGF Foundation made the appeal in a statement marking this year’s global observance, themed “Trapped Behind the Scam,” warning that traffickers are increasingly exploiting fake job offers, fraudulent travel opportunities, romance scams and online deception to lure unsuspecting victims into modern slavery and other forms of exploitation.
National Coordinator of RHAGF, Dr. Duru Regina, said the organisation’s over 18 years of grassroots engagement in sex slums, vulnerable communities and among at-risk populations across Nigeria had exposed the devastating impact of human trafficking on disadvantaged groups.
According to her, the 2026 theme reflects the evolving strategies adopted by traffickers, who prey on poverty, desperation and the aspirations of young people seeking better opportunities.
She noted that youths living in slums and underserved communities remain the most vulnerable to deceptive recruitment schemes that often end in trafficking, abuse and forced labour.
Dr. Regina said RHAGF has continued to combat the menace through sustained community sensitisation campaigns, school outreach programmes and direct engagement with residents of high-risk communities to educate them on trafficking tactics and personal safety.
She added that the Foundation also provides psychosocial support, vocational skills training and reintegration assistance to survivors, helping them rebuild their lives with dignity and regain economic independence.
Describing silence, ignorance and desperation as major enablers of human trafficking, the Foundation urged governments, civil society organisations, community leaders and citizens to invest more in prevention initiatives at the grassroots, strengthen reporting and rescue mechanisms, and provide comprehensive rehabilitation services for victims.
The RHAGF Foundation, she said reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, preventing exploitation and restoring dignity to survivors, stressing that no individual should become a victim of trafficking through fraudulent schemes or be subjected to exploitation.
“The International Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed annually on July 30 to raise awareness about the global threat of human trafficking and promote collective action to prevent the crime while protecting and supporting survivors.
