The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, the rule of law and national unity.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, remains one of Nigeria’s most significant national observances, honouring the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles and advocacy paved the way for the country’s democratic journey.

Speaking through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister said the Federal Government remains steadfast in preserving and strengthening democratic ideals, including transparency, accountability, inclusive governance and respect for the rule of law.

According to the Minister, the current administration is committed to upholding these principles as part of its broader agenda for national development and institutional stability.

Tunji-Ojo also emphasized the importance of security in sustaining democratic governance, noting that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, will continue to strengthen internal security measures across the country to safeguard lives and property.

“A secure and stable environment is fundamental to the growth of democracy and the achievement of sustainable national development,” he stated.

The Minister urged Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic progress and the responsibilities of citizenship.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.

The Federal Government called on citizens across the country to recommit themselves to responsible civic engagement, peaceful coexistence and national unity as Nigeria celebrates another milestone in its democratic journey.
