The quiet Upake community in Ajaokuta was thrown into chaos on March 17, 2026, after suspected gunmen opened fire during the evening breaking of fast, leaving several residents injured and abducting a prominent traditional figure.

The victim, Salihu Momohjimoh, also known as the Taru-Onotu of Eziogu Upake, was reportedly seized at about 8:30 p.m. amid sporadic gunshots at Inayere area, according to eyewitness accounts.

Four days after the incident, the abducted traditional leader remains in captivity, heightening fears among residents and underscoring a growing wave of kidnappings in the region.

Locals describe the attack as one in a series of troubling security breaches that have shaken an area previously known for peace, hospitality, and communal harmony. Community members say the absence of a strong security presence has left them vulnerable, relying largely on local vigilante groups.

Calls for urgent government intervention have intensified, with appeals directed to Ahmed Usman Ododo, members of the National and State Assemblies, and other key officials. Residents are urging swift action to secure the safe release of the abducted leader and to curb the rising tide of kidnappings.

Africa News Nation,  quoted Eyewitness Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, community leaders emphasized that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government at all levels.

The Upake community expressed confidence in the state government’s responsiveness but stressed the urgency of immediate and decisive action.

They called not only for the rescue of Momohjimoh but also for long-term security measures to prevent further attacks.

As anxiety grows, residents continue to hope for the safe return of their traditional leader while demanding lasting solutions to the persistent security challenges facing the area.
