The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Cosmopolitan University have taken a major step toward advancing climate-smart innovation and digital agriculture, as both institutions agreed to establish a formal partnership aimed at harnessing artificial intelligence, satellite technology and meteorological science for sustainable development.
The commitment was reached on Monday, July 6, during a courtesy visit by the Vice Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University, Prof. Carl Adams, to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike.
Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Anosike highlighted the shared vision of both institutions in translating scientific research into practical solutions that benefit society. He noted that NiMet has made significant progress in producing research-based publications and weather-related information to support national development, while commending the university for embracing emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to build climate-ready and climate-resilient communities.
In his remarks, Prof. Adams reaffirmed the university’s commitment to developing the next generation of indigenous AI scientists and promoting climate-smart innovations powered by satellite data and artificial intelligence applications.
Both institutions agreed to formalise their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The proposed partnership will focus on multidisciplinary research in climate-smart and digital agriculture for smallholder farmers, aviation research, staff exchange programmes, data analytics, AI applications, and the effective use of meteorological information to improve livelihoods and strengthen climate resilience.
The Vice Chancellor was accompanied on the visit by the Pro-Chancellor of the university and other members of the institution’s senior management team.
