NiMet DG Heads Nigerian Delegation to Global Peace, Sustainability Conference in Tokyo

In Tokyo, Japan — The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof.Charles Anosike, has led a Nigerian delegation to the 5th conference of the Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS), held from March 4 to 7, 2026, at the headquarters of the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan.

The NERPS 2026 Conference focused on how technology can advance multilateral cooperation for peace and sustainable development, drawing experts, researchers, and policymakers from across the globe.

The event opened with a welcome address by the Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Tshilidzi Marwala, had
keynote presentations delivered by Måns Nilsson, Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and Rumiko Seya, President of Reach Alternatives (REALs).

During the conference, Prof. Anosike and members of the NiMet team participated in several parallel sessions addressing critical global issues, including climate action, disaster resilience, migration, climate change mitigation, sustainable peace and security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental sustainability on land and in marine ecosystems.

The delegation also contributed to discussions and reviews focused on climate governance, urban resilience, equitable climate justice, transboundary resource management, and advanced approaches for monitoring and predicting environmental changes.

NiMet’s active participation facilitated knowledge exchange and strengthened collaboration with international partners.

It is worthy of note that the delegation of Nigerians to Tokyo, Japan led by Prof. Charles and the agency’s contributions helped shape key conversations on climate action and sustainable development, while also boosting Nigeria’s presence and influence within the global sustainability community.
