The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports, in a major boost to Nigeria’s aviation safety and service standards.
The latest certification followed a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain the upward movement of Nigeria’s ratings by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The certification was achieved after a rigorous third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc. Canada on NiMet’s products and services provided to airlines at the three airports.
The audit, which lasted from July 20 to 23, 2026, found NiMet’s services to be in conformity with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard.
The latest development comes as NiMet also successfully secured recertification to the ISO 9001:2015 standard at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
With the latest certification, NiMet now has revised ISO 9001:2015 certification covering aeronautical meteorological services at eight Nigerian international airports.
The airports include Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport; Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri; and Osubi Airport.
The ISO certification is valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits scheduled to ensure continued compliance until the next recertification exercise in 2029.
In a letter dated July 26, 2026, addressed to NiMet’s Director-General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, Certech Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, said the objectives of the surveillance audit were achieved.
The letter, titled “ISO 9001:2015,” noted that a systematic process audit was conducted, with emphasis on risks and objectives in line with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
Following the successful third-party audit, Certech Inc. Canada issued a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s quality management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.
The agency described the achievement as particularly significant because it represents the first time NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports were subjected to an ISO 9001:2015 certification audit.
Speaking on the development, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, expressed satisfaction with the achievement, commending the agency’s Quality Management System team for its commitment.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, have been working round the clock to achieve this feat,” Anosike said.
He, however, stressed that the agency would not rest on the latest achievement, noting that management remained committed to improving operational standards across all its locations.
“We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he added.
