In a major step toward strengthening innovation and modernizing public service delivery, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated its Service Innovation Committee, a new body tasked with driving research, digital transformation, and institutional excellence across the Agency.

The Committee was inaugurated on Wednesday at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja as part of efforts to institutionalize innovation, deepen research and development, and enhance operational efficiency.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda and directives from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation aimed at fostering innovation across government institutions.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, described innovation as a cornerstone of the Agency’s current administration. He emphasized that, within a scientific institution, innovation goes beyond new ideas to involve transforming scientific discoveries, research findings, and inventions into practical solutions that create value and improve service delivery.

Professor Anosike highlighted a series of reforms introduced since he assumed office, including the modernization of operational systems, improvements in weather and climate services, stronger stakeholder engagement, enhanced staff capacity development, expanded strategic partnerships, and the deployment of digital technologies to support decision-making and operational effectiveness.

According to him, these initiatives have strengthened organizational performance while creating an environment that encourages creativity and continuous improvement.

“The establishment of this Committee formalizes our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement,” he said.

The Director-General explained that the Committee will play a strategic role in identifying and promoting innovative climate-smart solutions, supporting research and development activities, and providing evidence-based recommendations to advance NiMet’s mandate. It is also expected to advise management on innovation-related issues and monitor the implementation and progress of innovation initiatives across the Agency.

The inauguration of the Service Innovation Committee signals NiMet’s determination to build a culture of excellence, professionalism, and innovation while positioning the Agency to respond effectively to emerging technological, environmental, and stakeholder challenges in an increasingly dynamic world.

With the new Committee now in place, NiMet is expected to strengthen its role as a leading scientific institution, leveraging innovation and research to deliver more efficient, reliable, and impactful meteorological services for national development.
