The Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has mourned the death of its former Director General, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa, describing him as a pioneer administrator and one of the founding fathers of the Scheme.
The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, stated this during a condolence visit to the Obasa family at the deceased’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara State.
General Nafiu described Colonel Obasa as a pioneer manager who played a significant role in laying the foundation for the strong administrative structure upon which the NYSC has been sustained over the years.
He noted that Obasa served as the third Chief Executive of the Scheme from 1979 to 1984, during which he recorded significant achievements in the development of the organisation.
The NYSC boss commended the late Colonel Obasa for his contributions to the growth and development of the Scheme, praying that God would grant his soul eternal rest.
According to him, the death of the former Director General was not only a loss to his immediate family but also to the entire NYSC family, whose members would continue to cherish his contributions and enduring memories.
General Nafiu also recalled the encouragement and support he received from the late Colonel Obasa during his lifetime.
He assured the bereaved family that the NYSC would continue to build on the solid foundation laid by its founding fathers and work towards strengthening the Scheme.
“I convey the condolences of the entire NYSC family to the Obasa family,” he said.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mr Victor Obasa expressed appreciation to General Nafiu and the NYSC management for the condolence visit, describing his father’s death as shocking.
He, however, thanked God for the life of the late Colonel Obasa and the enduring legacies he left behind.
“We are overwhelmed, and our family says thank you, NYSC, for the honour you gave our dad. We are very grateful to you for not forgetting him,” he said.
