…. Urges Airlines to Obtain Airport-Specific Weather Reports, Residents to Observe Safety Measures

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of the country from Tuesday, June 9, to Thursday, June 11, 2026, and advised residents, motorists and airline operators to take necessary precautions against adverse weather conditions.
In a three-day weather outlook issued by the agency’s Central Forecast Office on Monday, NiMet predicted that northern states would experience mostly sunny conditions with patches of cloud cover, alongside isolated morning thunderstorms and rainfall in some areas.
According to the forecast, afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected to affect parts of Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Yobe and Katsina states during the period under review.
For the North-Central region, the agency projected cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine, while thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Benue and Kogi states, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
NiMet also forecast predominantly cloudy weather over southern Nigeria, with isolated morning showers likely in parts of Rivers, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and other coastal states.
The agency noted that thunderstorms and moderate rainfall would become more widespread across the region as the day progresses throughout the forecast period.
On Thursday, increased thunderstorm activity is expected in parts of Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Enugu, Bayelsa, Delta, Lagos, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states during the morning hours, while moderate rainfall is projected to extend to Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Edo states later in the day.
The agency warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised residents to secure loose objects to prevent damage. Motorists were also cautioned against driving during heavy rainfall because of reduced visibility and increased road safety risks.
NiMet further urged members of the public to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under tall trees, which could be susceptible to falling branches or collapse during severe weather conditions.
The agency advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to support effective flight planning and operational safety. It also encouraged residents across the country to remain informed through its regular weather forecasts and advisories as weather conditions continue to evolve nationwide.
