British independent energy company Savannah Energy PLC has confirmed the appointment of renowned Nigerian corporate governance expert and former PwC executive, Uyi Akpata, as a Non-Executive Director with immediate effect, strengthening its board as the company advances its growth strategy across Africa.
The appointment follows Savannah’s earlier announcement on October 9, 2025, of its intention to bring two Nigerians onto its board. The company said that following the publication of its 2025 full-year financial results and the completion of a transition period, Akpata is expected to assume the role of Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee.
Chairman of Savannah Energy, Joseph Pagop Noupoué, described Akpata’s appointment as a significant boost to the company’s leadership, citing his extensive experience in audit, corporate governance, risk management and the energy sector.
“We are pleased to welcome Uyi to the Savannah Board as a Non-Executive Director. His distinguished career spanning more than four decades, including leadership positions at PwC in Nigeria, West Africa and across the continent’s energy sector, makes him an outstanding addition to our Board,” Noupoué said.
He added that Akpata’s expertise would support Savannah’s continued expansion across Africa while enhancing long-term value for shareholders.
Responding to his appointment, Akpata expressed enthusiasm about joining the board at what he described as a pivotal stage in the company’s development.
“Savannah has built a strong and diversified energy business with a clear strategic focus and significant growth opportunities. I look forward to working closely with the Board and management team to contribute my experience in governance, audit, risk oversight and the energy sector to support the company’s continued growth and success,” he said.
A chartered accountant with more than 40 years of professional experience, Akpata retired from PwC on June 30, 2024, after serving in several senior leadership positions, including Senior Partner for Nigeria, Regional Senior Partner for West Africa and Head of Oil and Gas for Africa. During his career, he led audit engagements for major international oil companies, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and several leading businesses across multiple sectors.
In October 2024, he established Rusa Advisory, a governance and risk management consulting firm focused on helping organisations achieve sustainable growth, operational efficiency and profitability.
Beyond his professional career, Akpata currently chairs the boards of emPLE Life Insurance and Unified Payments Limited, serves as President of the Nigerian Cricket Federation and holds several leadership positions in education and professional organisations. He is also a Professor of Practice in Financial Accounting at Miva Open University and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
Savannah Energy confirmed that Akpata holds no shares in the company.
