The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Federal Ministry of Transportation have taken a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s railway infrastructure with plans to connect the Kano Railway Station and other key railway operational facilities to the National Grid.
The decision followed a strategic stakeholders’ engagement held on July 7, 2026, at the TCN Kano Regional Headquarters, where participants outlined a roadmap for delivering reliable electricity to critical railway infrastructure.
The proposed grid connection is expected to provide stable and uninterrupted power supply to the Kano Railway Station and other railway operational facilities, boosting operational efficiency and enhancing service delivery across the rail transport sector.
During the meeting, stakeholders reviewed the technical requirements for the project, implementation timelines, operational coordination, system reliability, and the responsibilities of participating agencies.
They also discussed compliance with national grid standards, network safety, and strategies for seamless integration into the country’s transmission network.
Speaking at the engagement, the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, underscored the importance of sustained collaboration among all stakeholders.
He noted that early technical engagement would ensure smooth project execution and guarantee a dependable power supply for the railway facilities.
Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development agenda, describing the initiative as a significant milestone in improving critical national infrastructure through reliable electricity supply.
When completed, the grid connection is expected to enhance the efficiency of railway operations, support economic activities, and reinforce the Federal Government’s drive to modernize the nation’s transportation network.
The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Region; the Federal Ministry of Transportation; Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO); Team Nigeria, the project consultants; and the project contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
