Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for all the appointees seeking elective offices in their various state to resign before March 31, 2026.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially confirmed the resignation of its Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, as he prepares to enter the race for the Bauchi State governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed the development on Monday while speaking with diplomatic correspondents in Abuja. According to Ebienfa, Tuggar tendered his resignation to President Bola Tinubu in compliance with a presidential directive mandating all political appointees seeking elective office to step down on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, affects ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, and heads of federal agencies.
Officials say the policy aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and is designed to prevent conflicts of interest ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Tuggar, 59, is a seasoned diplomat and organisational analyst who previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany. Over the years, he has held several roles across both the public and private sectors.
