The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has praised journalists for their critical role in promoting global peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development, as Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark World Press Freedom Day 2026.

Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development,to commemorate the annual event, the Minister commended media professionals, particularly those covering the Ministry’s activities, describing them as indispensable partners in advancing the rights and welfare of women, children, families, and vulnerable populations. She noted that journalists also play a key role in the fight against gender-based violence.
She congratulated journalists nationwide, emphasizing that the observance—established by the United Nations through UNESCO—serves as a vital platform to reinforce the importance of a free, independent, and responsible press in fostering human rights, national security, and inclusive development.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim highlighted the central role of journalists in building societies grounded in truth, justice, accountability, and social cohesion. She stressed that the Ministry’s programmes are aligned with these ideals, particularly in strengthening family systems, promoting inclusion, and expanding access to social protection.
The Minister underscored that these initiatives are anchored within the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes people-centered development, social investment, and the protection of vulnerable groups. According to her, a vibrant media landscape is essential for ensuring transparency, boosting citizen engagement, and achieving national development goals.
She further noted that the designation of 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development represents a strategic push to enhance social impact programmes, strengthen institutions, and foster partnerships across sectors in line with national priorities.
Describing the media as a bridge between government and citizens, the Minister said it remains a powerful voice for the voiceless, amplifying issues of justice, equity, and national importance. She urged journalists to uphold professionalism, integrity, and ethical standards while shaping narratives that promote peace, unity, and accountability.
Reaffirming her Ministry’s commitment to collaboration, Sulaiman-Ibrahim pledged continued partnership with the media to achieve a just, inclusive, and prosperous society where no one is left behind.
World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3 to promote press freedom, evaluate media independence, and honour journalists who continue to serve under challenging conditions.
