Nigeria’s infrastructure modernization agenda received a boost on Wednesday as the Federal Government unveiled sweeping plans for new road projects, enhanced security systems, and sustainable energy integration, while the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited demonstrated its commitment to cleaner energy solutions.
During a high-level meeting in Abuja, the Managing Director of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited, Engr. Adeleye Falade, presented a model of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) ship to the Minister of Works, David Umahi. The symbolic presentation underscored NLNG’s push toward innovation and the adoption of cleaner energy in Nigeria’s transportation and maritime sectors.
The engagement also served as a platform for both parties to explore collaboration opportunities aimed at advancing sustainable infrastructure across the country.
Speaking at the meeting, Umahi disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road and Bridges Project in Rivers State under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, with an estimated value of ₦150 billion. The project, he said, will deploy advanced concrete technology designed to last between 50 and 100 years with minimal maintenance.
The Minister revealed that the proposal will soon be presented to the Federal Executive Council for ratification, in line with due process requirements.
In a broader move to modernize Nigeria’s road network, the Federal Government has also approved the installation of solar-powered street lighting, large-scale tree planting, and landscaping along major highways.
These measures are expected to improve night visibility, enhance security, beautify transport corridors, and stimulate economic activities in host communities.
Additionally, plans are underway to introduce Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance systems along key highways, supported by dedicated monitoring centres. Officials say the initiative could cut emergency response times to under 10 minutes, significantly improving road safety.
The infrastructure blueprint further includes rest areas, relief stations, and service hubs to strengthen maintenance operations, alongside designated truck parking facilities to ease congestion. Discussions with host communities are ongoing to secure land for these developments.
Umahi emphasized that contractors have been directed to reinvest cost savings into sustainability measures such as solar lighting and environmental improvements. He added that the government has set a strict delivery timeline of no more than 12 months, with firm controls to prevent cost overruns.
Describing the current wave of development as unprecedented, the Minister said the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda is focused not just on building roads, but on delivering durable, world-class infrastructure that drives economic growth and improves citizens’ quality of life.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, transparency, and inclusive development, noting that ongoing reforms are designed to ensure infrastructure projects deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians nationwide.
