The US State Department has ordered non-emergency personnel and their families to leave the American Embassy in Abuja, citing a rapidly deteriorating security situation across Nigeria.
This authorized departure, issued on April 8, 2026, highlights the growing inability of Nigerian authorities to maintain basic order even in the capital. The embassy will stay open with reduced capacity for emergency services, while the consulate in Lagos continues normal operations.
Nigeria remains under a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory due to rampant crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and unreliable healthcare. Multiple states and regions carry the highest Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning, where terrorists, armed gangs, and bandits operate with near impunity.
This move sends a clear signal: even the US government views the risks as too high for routine staffing.
